Kim & Aaron’s Humanist Wedding at Carlowrie Castle

When’s the ideal time to get married? Possibly not when you’ve got a new baby, and trying to sell your house, but those minor inconveniences didn’t put Kim and Aaron off their stride one little bit!

Their story reflects the reality of so many lives these days. When they met, Kim already had her two sons, Harry and Rory, and when they wrote their LoveWork, they realised that the boys featured so heavily, they invited them to write something for the ceremony themselves. Better still, they made promises to them too!

Did I mention that Kim and Aaron live in Australia? Well – just to make things a little more challenging – they decided to travel half way across the world to celebrate their love at the fabulous Carlowrie Castle, and it was worth the detour!

When they met, Kim was in the process of doing her house up prior to putting it on the market, and a friend recommended a good and reliable builder. Sure enough, Aaron didn’t just show up early every morning, he brought her a coffee, and they found themselves enjoying each other’s company way more than expected. In the ceremony, their friends Michelle and Scott told that story – in Aaron and Kim’s own words.

Among other things, Aaron said, “My god, can I say was I giddy or what? I’m not sure if I was showing it. I had feelings there could have been something between us but for Kim to like me, to become like apple pie & ice cream, to become like Shrek and Fiona – I must have been dreaming!”

So he asked her out, and she said no… but then she texted all her friends who’d heard her going on about him for weeks, and changed her mind! As Kim said, “I still can’t believe this man had seen me in pyjamas with no makeup and had witnessed my kids WWE wrestling at 7 AM, and yet, he still wanted to go on a date with me!”

A couple of months in, Aaron quite literally saved Kim’s life when he noticed the signs of appendicitis and got her to hospital in time. There’s a moment they both remember, standing in front of a mirror in the hospital bathroom, Aaron helping Kim brush her teeth post-surgery as he held her catheter. It was – as they said – oddly romantic, and it was the moment they both knew they were in this together.

Since then, they’ve embraced a life full of beautiful chaos. Two days after they moved in together, they learned they were expecting a baby. A few weeks after that, Aaron proposed. Since then, they’ve had little Callan, sold both of their homes and bought their dream house which they moved into when they got back to Australia. What a whirlwind!

I loved how Aaron and Kim made promises to the boys.

Aaron kicked off, saying “Harry and Rory, from the moment I met both of you, you welcomed me into your world with open arms – with laughter, energy, and all the little moments that make our family so special. I might not have been there from the very beginning, but I promise to be here for every moment from now on”, and Kim said, “thank you for welcoming Aaron into our family, and more recently, thank you for embracing life with your little brother, Callan, with so much love.”

Aaron said, “to all three of you, we promise to always be there for you. To always listen to you, to cheer you on, and to be there when life is hard,” and Kim wrapped it up, saying, “we promise that, no matter what happens, you’ll always know how much we love you.”

There wasn’t a dry eye in the house…

When Kim sent me these great photos a couple of weeks ago she wrote, “We just wanted to say a huge thank you for everything you did for our wedding. It was truly incredible. We’ve had so much positive feedback – One of my friends asked for a copy of the script because it was the best ceremony she’d ever been to! So many people mentioned how engaging it was, and how invested they felt the whole way through because it was so personal.”

“We loved that we were able to make it completely our own, while still having your guidance throughout. The “Love Work” was a great touch! I’ve told so many people about it! It also made writing the ceremony feel surprisingly easy! Our Aussie reception is coming up on the 28th of March, and we’re planning to share our story again for everyone who missed it the first time.”

That’s another great idea – and I hope you send me some more photos and stories about it to add to this post, Kim!

Thank you again, not just for choosing me as your celebrant, but particularly for the idea of making promises to Harry, Rory and Callan; I just know that lots of other couples are going to love that idea.
