About

Tim is the most professional, helpful and friendly Humanist celebrant in Scotland. - Elizabeth Bell, Vows Award Winner 2014

I've been a Humanist Celebrant since October 2005, which is quite simply the most rewarding thing I've ever done. I'm delighted to be part of Celebrate People, a humanist and spiritual care organisation who offer ceremonies, chaplaincy, counselling, retreats and talks. I'm also the first ever Humanist Chaplain to the University of Edinburgh and the author of "WE DO!" 'the ultimate guide on how to create your very own, personal, wedding ceremony'. My Funeral Blog

My Funeral Blog

Love is at the heart of every humanist funeral and it’s my privilege to help you express it.

You dealt with a sensitive and difficult occasion with respect and dignity. It gave us the opportunity not only to mourn, but also to rejoice in our daughter’s life, and for that I will always be grateful.

My Talks

My Talks

I relish the opportunity to speak about Humanism. I was the fifth humanist to give the Time for Reflection address at the Scottish Parliament, and in 2017 I became the first ever to speak at an official government Remembrance Day ceremony. Drop me a line if you’d like me to come and talk to your organisation.

My Writing

My Writing

I’ve written for several newspapers including The Scotsman and The Guardian. Most of these articles are by me, but there are a few about me too.

From venues and musicians to photographers (and even other celebrants!), here’s my insider’s guide to some of the best people and places in Scotland for your big day.

Testimonials

  • Everybody said how amazing the ceremony was and those who never knew much about humanist ceremonies mentioned how special, unique and relevant it all was. You were just fantastic and we were so glad you were able to make the process of it all so easy. The homework that was set made us really think about marriage in a different way and made us both realise that we were making the best decision. We appreciate everything you done for us and if we were to do it all again we wouldn’t change a thing (maybe a dress rehearsal though, lol).

  • Hi Tim We wanted to say thank you for the part you played in our wedding on Saturday we had the BEST day. You were brilliant while Grace and Harry were making sure everyone knew they were there and helped us and everyone else feel at ease about it. Our guests all loved the service too and told us how different, happy and relaxed it had all felt it was everything we hoped it would be and more.

    The Monaghans, July 2019
  • Myself and Neil would like to thank you again for carrying out our beautiful wedding ceremony on Friday 31st May. It was truly a memorable day that we will never forget. Quite a few of our guests commented on how they enjoyed the humanist ceremony and how personal it was. I would highly recommend Tim, to anybody who is looking for a humanist. Love Mr and Mrs Peters x

    Bryony Stewart, July 2019
  • Thanks very much for conducting our ceremony on Saturday – you were brilliant and really delivered the service just as we wished! Everyone has said to us what a beautiful service and and said how great they thought you were – in particular my 90 year old Papa who has never been to a Humanist ceremony before, he thought you were absolutely brilliant! Thanks again Tim!

Louise & Ryan Hook, July 2019
  • Tim’s professionalism and manner throughout the whole process in the lead up to our wedding was fantastic, and just what we needed in terms of how to structure our own ceremony. Our guests have commented on how much they enjoyed our ceremony, and have given us lovely remarks such as it was the best ceremony they have seen etc. This would not have been possible without Tim’s support. We feel that with Tim’s help we developed a ceremony that was personalised to us, and really summarised our past as well as what is to come with our future.

    Ruth Darroch, February 2019
  • You played a great big part of the joyous day and we couldn’t have done without you so we are eternally grateful.

    Stephanie & Kari, May 2021
  • A few of our guests have told us it was the best ceremony they have ever been to (including their own!)

    Caitlin & Andrew May 2021
  • We both agree that the ceremony was one of the best parts, if not the best part, of the entire day.

    Nicole & John July 2021

Trees for Life Donation

My promise is simple: from now on, for every couple whose wedding I conduct, I will plant a tree. I love the thought that hundreds of years from now, some of them may still be standing and I can’t think of a better and more enduring testament to love: the love we have for one another, and the love we have for the fragile planet on which we live. Find out more about the project on my blog and you can donate a tree yourself here. Trees for Life logo and tagline

Chaplaincy

I know, 'humanist chaplain’ sounds like an oxymoron, but it isn’t. Chaplaincy is a safe space to talk about your issues: everyday ones like money, study and loneliness, or big ones like identity, love and death. Humanism looks beyond the things that divide us to those that unite us. All chaplains do that, but I do it from a secular perspective. Get in touch any time: that’s what I’m here for.
